The body of a 73-year-old Missouri man was found in the Horseshoe Canyon area on the border of Emery and Wayne counties on Saturday, August 3. Grant Welland had been hiking and was supposed to make contact with his family on July 28. Canyonlands National Park rangers were notified on Aug. 2 that the missing man might be in the area. Immediately, park rangers began searching for Welland’s vehicle, which was located at the Horseshoe Canyon trailhead at approximately 8 p.m. that evening.

Emery County Sheriff’s Office and search and rescue personnel assisted Wayne County in locating Welland. A search crew in the Department of Public Safety helicopter located the body at 11:50 a.m. on Aug. 3. The body was transported to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.
