Carbon welcomed Maeser Prep to town for a region showdown on Thursday.

The game was close in the early minutes with Carbon gaining a one-point advantage after the first quarter of play. The Dinos then used a 6-0 run to go into halftime up 24-16. The third quarter plagued Carbon again as the Lions outscored them by 10 points. The Dinos hit their stride in the last quarter to seal the 58-49 win.

Derek Hillam went down with an apparent injury in the first quarter. He came back into the game and played a few minutes until he went down again and could no longer continue. Hillam received a MRI later that night and found out that he dislocated his hip, suffered a torn labrum in the hip with a small fracture in the bone as well as a cam lesion.

“I have to see a specialist up north. I will either get cortisone shots or they will have to repair it. [If I can], I will play throughout the year, play through the pain, but I will have to miss track and get surgery eventually,” Hillam said.

Brady Gagon led the Dinos with 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half to help Carbon get the needed win. Kaleb Nelson also helped pick up the Dinos with a double-double as he recorded 14 points and 11 rebounds.
