Derek Hillam was back in the lineup for the Dinos when they took on the Union Cougars on Wednesday in Price.
The first half was extremely close as Carbon took a three point lead, 27-24, into halftime. Third quarter struggles affected the Dinos again as they only put up five points to the Cougars’ 16. Down 40-32, Carbon shook off the offensive rust and scored 26 points in the final quarter to force overtime.
The game remained even as each team missed opportunities in the first overtime period to get ahead. The second overtime period leaned toward Union’s favor. Down 66-64, Hillam was fouled and went to the line for a one-and-one. He missed the front end and the Dinos ran out of chances to win the game. They fell in heartbreak fashion 69-67.
Hillam led the team with 21 points followed by Collin Lewis with 17. Braxton Bennett pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
The biggest difference in the game was free throw attempts. The Cougars made it to the line for 22 attempts compared to the Dinos’ five.
Carbon (4-11, 1-4 Region 14) will host ALA (4-9, 1-3 Region 14) next Wednesday, Jan. 16. The game will be streamed live online.
