The Carbon baseball team competed in the Pizza Hut Classic in St. George over the weekend. The Dinos played a doubleheader on both Friday and Saturday. They came out of the weekend with a 1-3 record, beating Cedar City 5-3 and losing to Bear River 10-4, Box Elder 6-4 and Payson 6-3.

Walks really hurt Carbon against Bear River as the Bears scored 10 runs on six hits. The Dinos played a close game with the Box Elder Bees during their second game on Friday. Carbon grabbed two quick runs in the first inning to take the lead. The Bees tied the game in the third and then scored three more runs in the fourth. Carbon began chipping away at the lead and pulled within one in the sixth, 5-4, but the Bees added an insurance run in the bottom half and blanked the Dinos in the seventh to win the game.

Carbon started off Saturday hot by scoring four runs in the first inning against the Cedar City Redmen. The Dinos added another in the second to go up 5-0. Braxton Bennett pitched five scoreless innings to help the Dinos get the victory. Colin Lewis went 2-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

The Dinos again jumped out to a quick lead in their final game by scoring two runs in the opening inning against the Payson Lions. Payson got two runs back in the bottom half to pull within one, 3-2. The Lions then tied the game in the second and took the lead in the fourth. Carbon couldn’t string any hits together to get a run across after the first inning and fell to Payson, 6-3.

The Dinos have several games this week starting on the road at Salem Hills and Provo on Tuesday and Wednesday. Then, they will play in the San Juan Slugfest Thursday through Saturday against Providence Hall, Summit Academy and Grand.
