During the Carbon County Commission meeting on July 3, commissioner Tony Martines started the meeting off with a brief history of Independence Day after which commissioner Casey Hopes made a note to all those in the meeting to be careful with fireworks over the weekend and for the holiday on July 24.

Carbon County Human Resources Director Rose Barnes then presented a new American citizen: Patty Pyne. Barnes stated how proud she was of Pyne and her hard work to become an official American citizen. The commissioners then presented her a bouquet of red, white and blue flowers.

Helper City Mayor Lenise Peterman next came before the commissioners to discuss a consideration for adding a GIS system to the Community Impact Board list. Commissioner Hopes mentioned that he thinks this is a good thing. The Helper City Council accepted the GIS system and asked Carbon County to also accept. The opportunity will be a 50% grant request with the city securing funding to pay the other half.

After Mayor Peterman took her seat, a consideration to approve the interlocal agreement of the Older American Act funding was brought to the table. The program is for anyone over the age of 60. Funding was given last year and as a standard procedure, they have to request funding annually. This yearly renewal helps the program move forward and progress. The comment was made that there “could always be more funding,” meaning that any money given would be used appropriately and help the cause in any way financially possible. The money mainly goes toward buying food and socialization, but if the county received more money, they could possibly open the senior center for five days of the week instead of only four. The motion passed unanimously.

A public hearing was then opened for comment on the reconstruction of Ridge Road. No comments were made from the audience but the commissioners and other officials gave more details about the project, noting that the construction is for adding turning lanes and working on repairing the road from Highway 10 to Highway 6. It was explained that it is specifically for economic purposes and industrial use, and that there is a tremendous amount of focus on this road.
