Even in preseason, Carbon Basketball Coach Jeff Cisneros was blunt about the fact this would be a tough season for his team because they have so many new faces on the varsity. But after five losses, the Dinos posted their first win after a 67-59 win against Ogden on Saturday.

On Thursday, the team traveled to Union and lost 65-35. They faced a tough Ben Lomond team Friday and led until falling apart in the fourth. The Dinos dropped that game 53-39. Saturday morning they also played hard but fell far behind South Summit in a rough third quarter of play and lost their fifth in a row, 59-39.

Cole Fossat led the way in scoring for the Dinos During the long trip with 13 at Union. He also put up 10 against Ben Lomond and Garret Blanc scored 12. Fossat scored 11 in the loss to South Summit. Jerod Lessar was hot in the win against Ogden with 14 and was helped by Blanc who added 11. The team shot a combined 31-39 from the free throw line against Ogden on Saturday, a stat that Cisneros has said would help his team find its winning way if they continue to be a little more agressive in their offense.

Coach Jeff Cisneros felt the win is going to give his team some good confidence going forward.

“We have played good in spurts and really bad in spurts,” he said. “Consistency for all four quarter is they key to us finding a way to win.”

Caden Sherman was named to the all-tournament team for his 15 rebounds, which was a tournament high. Cisneros is pleased with Sherman’s progress, especially since this is only his second season playing high school basketball.

Right now the team is able to put up a pretty decent zone defense, but struggle when forced to go to a man-to-man rotation, Cisneros explained. He is still optimistic that they are working hard to learn and improve. He reminded them that this is what the preseason is all about and is looking forward to being ready for a tough region schedule.

The team plays at home this Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Stansbury.
