The Carbon High boys’ golf team played its first region tournament at the Roosevelt Golf Course last week with new head coach Brett Johnson. The Dinos held off Delta and Union to earn Johnson his first win since being named head coach.

Brady Gagon shot a team-low score of 79 followed by Carson Martines and Kaden Slavensky tied with 83 while Nick Olson and Jordan Penovich tied with 89. Tyler Yoklavich finished with 90. The top four scores were added to give Carbon a team total of 334.

Johnson said that he was happy with the way his team fought against the course, which historically has not been friendly to him. Gagon and Martines had holes that they struggled with, but they were both able to shake it off and finish strong.

The narrow victory gives the Dinos a two-stroke lead over second place teams Union and Delta, tied at 336. Juab finished in fourth place with 373, followed by Providence Hall with 389, American Leadership Academy with 425 and Maeser Prep with 489.

Carbon will play its second tournament of the young season at home at the Carbon Country Club Golf Course and look to improve on their region lead.
