The first round of the 3A State Playoffs was a heartbreaker for the Emery Spartans as the team fell in a shutout game against the Union Cougars, bumping them from the playoff race.

Hosted in Castle Dale, the first round pitted the Spartans, who tied for first with North Sanpete in Region 15 this season, against Region 14’s #6, Union.

Union’s Christopher Appawoo scored the only goal of the game in the first half. The Cougars shutout the Spartans throughout the game, taking the first round win.

Before Thursday’s game, the Cougars were the winners of only three games during region play, going 3-8 on the season. The Spartans’ record of 7-2 in Region 15 play was good for a tie for first place with North Sanpete. The Emery team ends the season winners of nine games overall.
