Following the approval of the previous month’s minutes and the items from the consent agenda, Gina Swasey thanked the Ferron City Council for its generous support of last year’s girls that attended American Legion Auxiliary’s (ALA) annual Girls State.

“ALA Girls State is a unique and exciting government-in-action learning program in which American Legion Auxiliary members guide young women to become knowledgeable stewards of freedom, democracy and patriotic citizens,” the program shares.

Swasey then added that this year, 2019-20, they can send six girls, which is how many applied and qualified. She continued by asking Ferron City for support once again. The council voted to donate $500 to the American Legion Auxiliary to be split amongst the girls.

The council then discussed contracting with Emery County for elections. A vote was taken and the council unanimously voted in favor of the contract.

The next item discussed was the issues of deer in the city. Mayor Adele Justice spoke about two options with the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR), which included an open archery hunt or the Urban Deer Program. The open hunt would be a draw to determine who would be hunting and would be open to anyone. However, the mayor further stated that it was too late to do the open hunt this year. The other alternative, the program, gave the city more control as to who could participate. All were in favor of the latter and so council members will begin the process with the DWR to get the program underway.

Also discussed was that Ferron City will be involved in the Highway 10 Main Street construction. Construction will begin on April 2 and should be finished around July 15. Eric Luke from Staker Parson told the council work on the drainage pipes at the intersection of Main and Center will be completed first. Then, the asphalt from 500 South to 300 North will be rotomilled and hauled away before being replaced. All citizens will receive a direct mail notice and Harmony Public Involvement representatives will meet with Main Street business owners on March 26 or 27.

Other matters of business discussed by the council at the March meeting on Wednesday included prioritizing their CIB list, donation policy and budget worksheet for the fiscal year 2019-20. The dates for Peach Days was announced for Sept. 6-8. The Mayor noted that new ideas for the annual celebration have been presented to her and they will be considered.
