With a few exceptions, the Forest Service will be opening campgrounds in Huntington Canyon to overnight camping this summer. The open campgrounds include Big Rock, Little Rock, Bridges Group Site B, Chute, Horse Canyon, Little Bear, Lower Little Bear, and Old Folks Flat. Stuart Guard Station Visitor Center will also reopen to visitors during summer weekends.
The Forks of Huntington campground is open for day-use-only, to accommodate picnics and people using the Left Fork of Huntington Canyon National Recreation Trail. South Hughes, Bridges Group Site A, and Sites1-4 will remain closed indefinitely. Nuck Woodward Road and Pole Canyon Trail remain closed due to damage resulting from post-fire flooding.
Reservations for many sites can now be made at www.recreation.gov. Campers who are making reservations should not confuse Little Bear Campground with Bear Canyon Campground, which is east of the Forest Service boundary and is owned and managed by Emery County.
Campgrounds, some trails and some roads have been closed since 2012 when the Seeley wildfire burned through Huntington Canyon and was followed by flooding and damaging debris flows. Forest recovery gained momentum in the spring of 2015 when an unexpected rainy period spurred growth of new vegetation. Slopes were not subject to heavy flooding in the summer of 2015 resulting in improved conditions for recreation in the canyon.
