Former Carbon High School golfer Ryker Smith has qualified for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

120 golfers battled for four spots in a 54-hole qualifying tournament at Sleepy Ridge in Orem and East Bay Golf in Provo this past June.

Smith shot a 73-72 to make the 20-player cut through 36 holes. For the final 18 holes, he shot a 68 to qualify with a final total round score of three under for the 54-hole tournament.

Smith will now represent the Pacific Central Utah District at the Optimist International Tournament July 27 through Aug. 1. The competition will feature 140 golfers from around the world.

The Optimist International Junior Golf Championship is one of the largest and best-known junior golf tournaments in the world. Optimists have been involved in the sport of junior golf for more than 30 years by holding local, regional and international tournaments.

Smith, a three-time First Team All-State selection at Carbon High School, will continue his golfing career at Southern Utah University in the fall.
