Emery kicked off its 2019 football season in front of the home crowd under the lights on Friday night. The Spartans played well out of the gates and forced a quick three and out. They then scored on their first play from scrimmage on a sweep play to the right.

The game remained 7-0 until Millard threw up a Hail Mary as time expired in the first half. The Millard receiver showed off his height and came down with the ball to make it 7-6 going into halftime.

The Eagles maintained their momentum in the third when they found the end zone once more to make it 13-7. Emery had several chances to score but stalled every time it got within 30-40 yards of the end zone.

With three minutes left in the game, Emery stopped Millard in the red zone. The Eagles were unable to convert the field goal, giving the Spartans life. But again, Emery could not sustain a drive. Millard scored once with about a minute remaining in the contest to win the game 20-7.

The Spartans had their moments and forced several turnovers but could not put together long drives to find points. They will play North Sanpete next at home on Friday, Aug. 23. That game will be streamed live on ETV Channel 10 and online.
