The first rodeo of the new season found several area youth qualifying for state. The rodeos at Oakley in Summit County were sponsored by the South Summit Rodeo Club on Friday and Saturday.

It was an especially good weekend for Shaylee Gilbert as she won the breakaway roping in 2.7 seconds both days. Hayden Cloward, along with partner Kash Cattoor, won the team roping on Saturday. Jessica Fox also placed sixth in breakaway both days. Riata Christiansen placed ninth in breakaway, seventh in goat tying, 10th in team roping with partner Jessica Fox and eighth in reining cow horse. Korby Christiansen also ranked seventh in the reining cow horse. All of these members of the Emery rodeo team have now qualified for state and will now work to complete their 70 points by the end of May.

Carbon team members Kolton and Kagen Rhodes also had a good weekend in shooting sports. Kolton was fourth in the light rifle while Kagen was seventth. Kagen also took ninth in trap shooting.

Next weekend, participants will head to Vernal for another two-day rodeo.
