“Janimal” Jan Jorgensen suffered his first professional defeat Friday. Josh Copeland stopped the former BYU Cougar, current Carbon Dino football coach and Showdown Fights’ heavyweight champion for Resurrection Fighting Alliance’s vacant heavyweight belt at 1STBANK Center near Denver.

The fight was stopped 11 seconds before the end of the first round. Copeland finished off Jorgensen with several vicious punches that sent the Helper native to the canvas. Copeland cut Jorgensen early in the round, but Jorgensen recovered and landed a few blows that seemed to stun Copeland.

A steady jab from Copeland kept Jorgensen off balance until the end of the fight when Copeland landed multiple finishing blows that ultimately ended the fight.

Copeland (9-0) is RFA’s first heavyweight champion. Jorgensen (7-1) suffered the first defeat of his professional career.

No word yet when Jorgensen might fight next. The Carbon Dinos open the 2014 season at home against Grand, the defending 2A runner-up, on August 22. It will be Jorgensen’s first game as head coach of his alma mater.
