Just a day after taking on the San Juan Broncos, the Emery Lady Spartans traveled to Payson to take part in the Payson City Tournament and came home with a 2-2 record.

In game one against North Sanpete, Ashton Bell hit her state-leading 10th home run in the Spartans’ 10-6 win over the Hawks. Not to be outdone, Kambrie Hinkins also went yard, bashing her seventh of the season, good for third in the state behind Bell. Emery scored seven of its 10 runs in the third and fourth innings to secure the win. Taylor Payne got the win in the circle.

Next up was 3A Cedar. The Redmen scored seven runs in the fourth, which put them ahead 12-2 en route to the 13-3 loss for Emery. Hinkins added another home run against Cedar, giving her eight on the season. Bell also hit her first career triple. Payne took the loss after giving up 11 of Cedar’s 13 runs.

Looking to rebound against Wasatch, a team Emery lost to 11-0 on March 21, the Spartans were buried early and were defeated 20-3. Hinkins homered in her third straight game and now sits alone in second place behind Bell atop the state home run leaderboard with nine.

The Lady Spartans finished up the day with a hard-fought come-from-behind victory over 5A Westlake, 9-8.

Westlake buried the Spartans early, leading 8-0 going into the bottom of the fourth. Emery chipped away at the lead, scoring four runs in the inning. Payne came on in relief of Bell in the fourth and allowed just one hit the rest of the way. The Lady Spartans then scored five in the bottom of the sixth for the walk-off win. Hinkins had two hits and two RBIs as did Gentry Noyes. Amber Peterson also had two RBIs in the game.

Emery (6-14, 1-4 Region 15) will play at Carbon (12-4, 1-2 Region 12) on Tuesday. The Lady Dinos upended the Lady Spartans 8-3 last week.
