On Proposed Relocation of Peerless Port of Entry in Carbon County, Utah.
UDOT Project No. S-006(206)230; PIN: 16739

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is proposing to use state funds to relocate the existing Peerless Port of Entry located along US-6 near Helper (milepost 230.6 to 230.5) to a new site located along US-6 near Carbonville (milepost 237.3 to 237.8) in Carbon County. The new site is approximately 7 miles south of the existing Peerless port of entry and approximately 3.5 miles north of Price, Utah.

The current Peerless Port of Entry location and design near Helper does not meet the needs of the port of entry and poses a safety risk to trucks and travelers along US-6. A new port of entry facility and location is needed due to the right-of-way limitations of the current port of entry. The existing Peerless Port of Entry site is situated outside of Helper and is confined to one site on the eastbound side of US-6. Because Peerless is on the eastbound side of US-6, westbound trucks must cross oncoming traffic to enter the facility. This left-hand turn poses a considerable safety risk to both trucks and other vehicles along US-6. Due to the safety hazard, the Peerless Port of Entry is rarely open to westbound traffic. When the existing port of entry is closed to westbound traffic to prevent a safety issue, this allows trucks to bypass the site and defeats the purpose of a port of entry to inspect trucks.

The proposed port of entry includes, but is not limited to, the following: additional ramp length and storage, turnabout area, oversized truck inspection area, weigh scale, and additional parking.
