Letter to the Editor: Remembering Tony Mele

Letter-to-the-Editor.jpg

The recent passing of Tony Mele in Arizona brings to mind our 1944 Carbon High baseball team. Tony grew up in Price and was the catcher on our team that year when we advanced to the state championship game. Unfortunately, Tony suffered a broken finger in the state semi-final game against Wasatch High School in a game played in Helper. We lost the state title game to South High of Salt Lake City in a game played at what is now known as Smith Ball Park in the capital city. We were at a distinct disadvantage in this game due to the loss of Tony and the lack of another experienced catcher.

The last time I saw Tony, I asked him if he remembered breaking his finger in the Wasatch game. “I sure do,” he replied. Holding up a crooked finger, he said, “This is my reminder.”
