One item that we find many people confuse when looking for financial assistance for their aging loved one is the difference between Medicare and Medicaid.

As a skilled nursing facility, we care for individuals that frequently use both, but they are not the same.

Medicare in a nursing home setting is usually just for short-stay patients (20-30 days). Specifically, individuals that are coming for rehab after surgery, illness or weakness.

Medicaid is different in that it is usually for individuals requiring long-term care.

Most individuals go to a skilled nursing facility for long-term care once they complete the extensive Medicaid application. Once approved, Medicaid will cover the cost for the remainder of the patient’s life as long as they stay in a skilled nursing facility.
