All of Region 12 got together on Tuesday for the regional cross country meet at the Carbon Country Club Golf Course. Evan Ellison from Grand set the pace for the three-mile race, ending in first with a 15:43 time. The top Spartan, Bryar Meccariello, was just 11 seconds behind Ellison and took home the individual bronze with his third place finish.

Carbon then stole the show grabbing three consecutive spots. Chad Page, James Bryner and Ryan Page took fifth, sixth and seventh with respective times of 16:21, 16:26 and 16:28. Emery’s Jess Christiansen followed the Dino trio in eight place (16:31) while Carbon’s Shane Scaugard rounded off the top 10 in 10th place (16:49).

In 13th was Spartan, Beau Cook, with a 17:03 time. Kobe Cruz grabbed 15th place for the Dino’s fifth runner. He ran the three mile race in 17:06. Merritt Meccariello and Korby Christiansen finished in 19th (18:03.3) and 20th (18:03.5) to complete the Spartans top five runners.

Carbon narrowly beat out Richfield by two points to take the meet and become Region Champions. Emery finished in third place as a team, 22 points behind Carbon.

“We pulled it off! Region 12 champs! Woot Woot!” Head coach Telisse Martak exclaimed. “All the boys ran great. Lots of personal bests.” All of Carbon’s top five runners improved on their times at the course by at least 25 seconds from earlier in the year. The Dinos’ spread from their top to fifth runner was under a minute once again and their sixth runner, Braxton Ware, finished in 19th (17:41). He is closing the gap on Cruz. “Overall it was a great day for the boys and they are primed and ready for state next week,” said Martak.

Grand had the top runner in the girls division as well. Kylah Ricks completed the race at 18:25, a full two minutes and 19 seconds before another runner crossed the finish line. Lady Dinos Grace Broadbear and Ambree Jones ended in third and fourth respectively with times of 20:52 and 20:59.

Adley Lester finished in 10th (21:53) for the Lady Spartans followed by her teammates Tyleigh Laws in 11th (22:03), Rileigh Meccariello in 13th (22:40), Bethany Justice in 16th (22:57) and Kallee Cook in 17th (23:05). The Lady Spartans’ spread between their top five runners was less than 75 seconds.

To round off Carbon’s top five, Samantha Schaugaard ended in 14th (22:47), Erin Stromness in 22nd (23:29) and Grace Tatton in 23rd (23:35).

Richfield took first with a team score of 59. Carbon held off Emery, finishing in second with 66 points while the Lady Spartans took third with 67 points. Martak continued, “The girls really stepped up knowing they had to take third at region to move onto state. They all really stepped up. Ambree Jones, Sam Schaugaard and Gracie Tatton had the biggest improvements and really helped seal our second place victory over Emery.”

“We would like to thank Carbon Country Club Golf Course for being the best backdrop for our race and allowing us to run on the course.” Martak concluded, “we would also like to thank Waste Logistics for providing restrooms and Carbon High Student Government for helping in the finish line area with timing.”
