Spartans Snag Firsts at Season Opener

Emery’s boys’ and girls’ swim teams faced off against North Sanpete, Wasatch Academy and Gunnison in the opening meet of their 2016 season and walked away with several victories.

The girls’ and boys’ team each walked away with a first-place finish collectively, with the girls’ team finishing over 200 points ahead of second-place Wasatch Academy and the boys nearly 130 points above their second-place competitors, also Wasatch.

The Lady Spartans started strong with the 200-yard medley relay team made up of Alexis Johansen, Kaelee Hooley, Tarryn Parkins and Katie Carter, grabbing first with a time of 2:17.88. Johansen returned in the 200-yard free to score second with freshman Brynne Urie grabbing third.

Emery filled the blocks in the girls 200-yard IM, with Hooley taking first after 2:59.44 and Parkins as well as Johansen coming in second and third, respectively. The 50-yard free ended well for the Lady Spartans as Katie Carter and BriAnne Bass took second and third. Both would return in the 500-yard free as well to score second and third, respectively.

Emery’s A and B relay teams brought home second and third, respectively at the 200-yard freestyle relay featuring Sydney Terwilleger, Tarryn Parkins, Bass and Shiloh Hayward on the A Team and Hallie LeRoy, Makyan Nielson, Laci Hulse and Harmony Wilson on the B Team.

Kaelee Hooley scored a first for Emery in the 100-yard backstroke coming in at 1:21.87 while teammate Terwilleger took second. Emery also represented in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The boys team also represented well at the meet, with the A team made up of Deegan Minchey, Daryl Guymon, Keldan Guymon and Garret Stilson grabbing first in the 200-yard medley after 1:56.51. The C Team of Parker Stilson, Malone Moss, Jonathan Seely and Colton Wilson also snagged third in the same event.

Emery represented well in the 200-yard free, with Garret Stilson returning to take first in 2:14.82. Daryl Guymon touched first in the 200-yard IM, bringing home first after 2:21.79. Moss and Parker Stilson finished in second and third, respectively.

Guymon and Minchey next took part in the 100-yard butterfly with Guymon notching a first-place finish and time of 1:02.25 with Minchey coming in behind with second. Garret Stilson, Minchey and Gage Jensen placed in the top three for the 500-yard freestyle with Stilson coming in at 6:09.44.

The relay team of Minchey, Jenson, Allen Durrant and Keldan Guymon also managed to score second place in their 200-yard freestyle relay. Parker Stilson managed to also put points up for Emery, coming in third in the 100-yard backstroke.

Keldan Guymon scored one of the final first-place finishes for the Spartans after finishing his 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.40. Emery’s A Team similarly took first in the 400-yard freestyle relay thanks to Garret Stilson, Moss, Levi Olsen and Daryl Guymon coming in at 4:15.55. The B Team made up of Logan Cox, Jayce Rudd, Wilson and Parker Stilson.
