The Union Cougars, whom the Emery Spartans have beaten three out of the past four meetings dating back to 2015, upended the Spartans Wednesday afternoon, 8-2. It was the first loss suffered by Emery this season.

Tied at 2-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cougars scored six runs to take the 8-2 lead. Tel Gardner started on the mound for the Spartans, giving up just two runs, none earned, in five innings of work. Race Nielsen spelled Gardner in the sixth and gave up six runs for the loss.

Emery managed just one hit in the game, a single off the bat of Easton Gordon. Union pitching struck out nine Spartan batters in the contest.

The Spartans (5-1, 0-0 2A East) will host the Millard Eagles on Friday afternoon at 3:30.
