USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum Press Release

Price, Utah – Join the USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum for our second annual Don L. Burge Day on June 26th! Don will always be remembered for his role in founding the museum back in 1961 and his 40+ years as Director. After his passing, in 2023, the museum decided to host a celebration of the man, and his work, every year on his birthday. And, this year, we have a lot to celebrate! So, please, come visit as we honor Don with free admission to the museum and activities that bring together a community he loved so very dearly.

After a recent review, the museum was successfully reaccredited by the American Alliance of Museums. This is the highest level of national recognition for museums and signifies a commitment to excellence, accountability, high professional standards and continued institutional improvement. First accredited in 1991, the Prehistoric Museum remains the only AAM accredited museum in eastern Utah.

To celebrate this institutional accomplishment, originally led by Don, we are having cake and refreshments in the Don L. Burge room at 3 p.m. This will be followed by an open folk music jam, another activity Don enjoyed, in the same space. So bring your banjo (his primary instrument), your voice, or any other acoustic instrument and help us fill the museum with music in his memory.

Don may have founded the museum, but he didn’t do it alone. Whether advisory board members, volunteers, or museum members, the community has always been at the heart of the museum. To honor this, we are offering free milkshakes for museum members (1 per membership) from Tallies & Smallies from 1-4 pm in the museum parking lot. Not yet a museum member? You can learn about the great benefits and sign up in the lobby.

Nothing pleased Don more than the sounds of children exploring the amazing paleontological and archaeological exhibits curated here at the museum. From 1:30-3:00, we will have a fun dinosaur-themed crafting activity in the Prehistoric Explorer’s Corner. We will also have a museum-wide scavenger hunt for the whole family. All completed entries will be entered into a drawing to win one of several prizes, including a gift certificate to the Giftshop, a free Family Membership, and a private tour.

So come on by for free admission, kid’s crafts, cake, milkshakes and music as we gather on June 26 to celebrate the museum and it’s founder, Don Burge.
