On Friday afternoon, 18 students from Bruin Point Elementary’s fourth and fifth grade classes participated in the school’s annual spelling bee.

Four rounds in, Getman Howell and Nadia Snyder went into a spell off for first place. Round after round, the fourth and fifth grade classes sat on the edge of their seats in suspense and cheered after each successful spell. Howell locked in first place with the word “spectator,” leaving Snyder to finish the bee in second.

Hayden Hunt also went into a spell off for third place. He captured third with the word “eliminate.”

All three students received a cash prize donated by East Carbon City along with a trophy.

The trio will move on to the next round at the district spelling bee at Mont Harmon Middle School later this month.
