USU Men’s Basketball Splits Opening Weekend at Home

The USU Eastern men’s basketball team swept West Wind Prep on its home court on Friday for the opening game of the 2014 season. The Eagles crushed their opponents 128-69 in the matchup.

USU Eastern’s successful first half put the team at 56-36 at halftime. The Eagles remained unstoppable in the second with multiple 3-point shots to earn the 128-69 win over West Wind. Josh Van Weezep led USU Eastern with 15 points in just 16 minutes of playing time. Andre Hogan followed Weezep with 13 points as well as five steals against the Arizona school.

The following day, the Eagles were narrowly edged out on their home court against Arizona Western College, 78-75. Arizona Western’s field goal and 3-point percentages beat out the Eagles, notching the opposing team the win. Brandon Sly, coming off the bench, led the offense for USU Eastern on Saturday with 17 points followed by Hogan with 12.

USU Eastern will now travel to compete against Central Wyoming College on Friday. Home play will resume on Nov. 14 at 5 p.m.
