Utah State University Eastern Director Selected for Top Women to Watch in Utah

USU Eastern’s Director of Student Life, Leadership and Involvement, was named one of 30 Women to Watch in Salt Lake City recently by the Utah Business.

Evette Allen, Ph.D., was recognized at a luncheon at Grand America Hotel to honor 30 of Utah’s most dynamic women plus featured in a special editorial in Utah Business Magazine’s May edition.

“When I first heard about the award, I was surprised because I didn’t know I was nominated. After it settled in, I was honored and thankful that someone thought enough of me to nominate me for such an awesome award. Overall this is just motivation to continue the work I do and I hope to inspire people along the way,” she said.

Allen advises the student government association, plans major events for students and heads leadership and multicultural initiatives at Eastern.

Prior to arriving at Utah State University Eastern, Allen worked on college campuses including student activities, new student orientation, advising and multicultural services. Originally from Arkadelphia, Ark., she graduated from Arkansas State University where she received her bachelor of art’s degree in communication studies, University of North Texas where she received a master of arts in communication studies and the University of Denver where she earned her doctorate in higher education.

Her research includes a focus on the experiences of students of color and social justice education. Allen’s recent projects include research on racial micro-aggressions experienced by students of color in student affairs graduate-preparation programs and research on the effects of a support program for women of color in doctoral programs.

In addition to her work on campus and research, Allen is involved in various community projects such as a college and career preparation program for students of color in Salt Lake City.
