The Utah Department of Transportation and Emery County Sheriff’s Office will meet on Wednesday to decide when to open SR 31 in Huntington Canyon. The canyon has been closed since a massive mudslide washed over the area on Wednesday.
According to Rosann Fillmore, Manti-La Sal National Forest Public Affairs Specialist, a mudslide trapped a driver between Engineer and Pole Canyons. Another slide trapped a different driver between Engineer and South Hughes Canyon.
When asked about how long the slides will continue, Fillmore said “no end in site,” but that “we have been told 3-5 years.”
No-stopping restrictions are still in effect through the canyon. “Be on watch,” Fillmore continued. “Any inclination of rain, stay out of the canyon.”
Fillmore also mentioned the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) website regarding what to do before, during, and after flash floods.
