Three young elementary students have represented Carbon County well, winning awards at the State level for their Reflections entries. Reflections is a PTA-sponsored creative competition with six categories: literature, music, photography, film, visual arts and dance choreography. This year’s theme was “Within Reach.” Students who earned the highest scores at their elementary schools moved onto the state competition.
Carson Palmer, a fourth grader from Castle Heights, won an Award of Excellence (first place) for his Film entry in the Intermediate Division. His artist statement said, “I made a video about my hamster, Race. I wanted to show that anything is within reach if you have imagination and determination. In this video, Race never gives up and gets his happy ever after.” Carson’s entry will now move on to the National level. The video can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/W1S-3whg8iI
Andrew Arthur, a kindergartner at Castle Heights, won an Honorable Mention for Photography in the Primary Division. His artist statement said, “I took this picture of my brother. It looks like he is holding the sun, putting the sun within reach.” His brother is standing in front of a setting sun with his hands raised above his head, cupping the sunshine as if it’s in his hands.
Colton Day, a kindergartner at Sally Mauro, won an Honorable Mention for Visual Arts in the Primary Division for his painting of a boy surfing. A staff member at Sally Mauro said, “Colton is one bright kindergartner! We love having him at our school.”
All three boys will be honored at an awards ceremony in Salt Lake City on April 20.
