A qualifying competition saw robotics teams from throughout Emery County competing for a spot in the upcoming state competition in February. Four local teams made it past the preliminary round and will compete at Weber State University on Feb. 10.

In an effort to qualify, four teams competed in Price. Team Overflow, made up of fifth and sixth graders from Castle Dale and San Rafael Middle School, earned the project award and finished in the top three to advance to the state competition. The Flash Bots from Cleveland Elementary took home the team spirit award. Team Garry, comprised of students from Huntington and Castle Dale, and Team Sea Bricks, Orangeville and Castle Dale students, rounded out the local competitors in Price.
Canyon View, San Rafael, Emery High and Green River High all had teams compete at the FTC Regional Qualifier in Cedar City, including Nuclear Core (San Rafael), TNT (EHS), Canyon View Venomous Cougars and Too Legit to Quit (GRHS). Of the four, GRHS, EHS and SRMS qualified for the state competition.

“The competition was tough with teams from all over the Western United States and this is a pretty big deal for these kids,” said Amanda Leonard, a local parent involved in the competitions. “All of the teams did a great job and represented Emery County amazingly well.”
