Regan PowellВ dominatedВ the competition at the Farm Bureau Invitational Saturday in Price as she placed first in three different events and helped the Dinos place second overall just behind Stansbury.
The junior finished first in the 1600, 800, and 400-meter races.
Head track and field coach Jimmy Jewkes has nothing but good things to say about Powell’s abilities.
“She’s just amazing,” he said. “She can do it all. She is one of the best we’ve had at Carbon probably in the last 10 years.”
Powell finished nearly two seconds in front of the nearest competitor in the 1600-meter race with a time of 5:37.44. She placed over four seconds in front of teammate Diana Olsen in the 800 at 2:30.42. Olsen came in at 2:34.74.
Maybe most impressive for Powell was her win in the 400. Though she hadn’t competed in that particular race this season, it didn’t stop her finishing in the top spot while also qualifying herself to compete at state later this year. Powell’s time of 59.59 earned her the fastest time in 3A on the season.
Emery also competed in the invitational but could only muster an 11th-place finish. Thirteen teams were invited to the meet.
Emery’s bright spots on the day were freshman Ashlynn Allred and senior Brandon McCandless. Allred won the long jump event with a jump of 17-04.75, nearly two feet longer than San Juan’s Cortney Macdonald (15-08.50). McCandless placed second in the shot put with a throw of 41-07.00.
The Dinos will next compete at Uintah on Friday. The Spartans will host the Darrell Gardner Invitational on the same day.
