Carbon, Emery and Grand Students Compete in History Day Fair

Saturday was National History Day and to celebrate, students grades 4-12 from Carbon, Emery and Grand counties competed in a history fair. Over 300 students from the tri-county area participated and produced projects ranging from documentaries to exhibits and even live performances.

This year’s theme was leadership and legacy. Students choose individuals or ideas that embody the theme to research and eventually turn it into a project. There are many levels of the competition and those who qualify at the regional level move on to compete at the state level. There is even an opportunity to win a trip to Washington D.C. if students succeed at the state level.

Carbon High history teacher and regional coordinator Chris Sweeney said he was very impressed with the projects presented this year.

“It’s easy to tell that the students have all worked really hard on these projects,” Sweeney said. “Some of these kids have been working on their projects since September.”

The first, second and third place winners will all move on to the state competition in Salt Lake City on April 18. In addition to those awards, cash prizes were also given to students who succeeded in categories such as military history and American history. This is the first year the history fair has done this and according to Sweeney, it was possible because of donations from several local businesses.

The Utah History Day East Regional History Fair wishes to thank its sponsors: Carbon High School, Carbon School District, Eastern Utah Community Credit Union, Emery Telcom, Jake Mellor Financial Services, The Mike Metzger Team/Bridge Realty, Taco Time and Wells Fargo.
