A PRWID truck driven by Patrick Hansen was hit by a westbound Union Pacific train at approximately 10:40 this morning in Wellington.
The accidentВ occurredВ at the intersection of Railroad Ave. and 100 East as the truck with a driver and passenger attempted to cross the tracks and turn left. Wellington Police Chief, Lee Barry, described the accident as “lucky”, because no one was injured.
“There isn’t much to report, the PRIWID truck was crossing the tracks and didn’t notice the train,” Barry said. ” Don’t know how he missed the horn and the crossing signal, but he did.”
Hansen, who was slightly shaken but in one piece said he doesn’t have any explanation except for just getting into a routine.
“I was just driving down from Ridge Road coming across the tracks and didn’t hear the train or see the crossing signal, I think I had become so accustomed to the construction in the area I just got into a routine. We are just lucky we had mostly made it across the tracks before we were struck,” Hansen explained.
The only injury that could be mentioned was the PRIWID truck which, after having been struck by a moving train was holding it’s own. Notible damage was two water tanks and a waste tank that had been knocked off the back half, and the railroad crossing light that suffered the impact from the PRIWID truck.
Wellington Police and Fire, Utah Highway Patrol, and PRIWID were all present on the scene.Video of the accident is posted below. CLick on the link to see the truck being hit by the train.
