The Emery County Business Chamber held its 2013 Installation and Awards Banquet ThursdayВ at the Emery County Recreation District. The guest speaker was Lieutenant Governor Greg Bell.
County Commissioner James Nelson opened the event, welcoming the group and recognizing the various business owners and political officials. He then turned the meeting over to Bell. Bell spoke about how Utah has been able to weather the economic downturn as a state and how it has positioned itself as the leading state for economic development.
“Officially and unofficially we (Utah) are being recognized as a great place for business,” he said.
He challenged chamber members to continue to innovate, think of new ideas, and nurture businesses. He then quoted Collin Powell
“I have commanded the most powerful army in the world, the most powerful military force. Even knowing that force, the biggest most powerful force in the world is wealth creation,” Bell said.
Bell then explained how wealth creation will bring people out of poverty faster than any welfare program. He further challenged those present to find the pioneer spirit and to adapt themselves to the times by thinking of new ways to build wealth and give back to society.
Following Bell, Tyler Jeffs, chamber president for 2012, explained how far the chamber had come from its inception approximately two years ago. He explained that it literally was started from scratch. He then listed some of its accomplishments, including starting the monthly lunch and learns, representing businesses at county commission meetings, developing the “Shop Local” campaign, doing business highlights, and further helping to create a unified voice for businesses and a better business climate in Emery County.
Following his remarks, Jeffs recognized many of the local businesses for assisting with the chamber. After these awards, the new chamber board of governors was sworn in by Judge Scott Johansen.
The meeting was then turned over to the current chamber president Julie Jones. She emphasized that she believed in the county, people and businesses. She challenged the chamber members to live by the motto “good-better-best, never let it rest, until your good is better and your better is best.”
