Emery County Sheriff Greg Funk confirmed that Emery County resident Matthew Alan Larsen is still missing. Larsen was last seen in December 2012.
According to Funk, search efforts have focused on a south and southwest region near Orangeville. The region is where the last ping off Larsen’s phone was detected. Funk understands, though, the missing man could be anywhere.
With snow rapidly melting, those enjoying the outdoors should keep an eye open for Larsen, said Funk. He explained that a large search effort was to be conducted the weekend of March 23, but due to the mine accident at Rhino’s Castle Valley Mine and bad weather, the search was called off.
“We are currently arranging another search effort in the next few weeks,” Funk said. “I am unsure of when this will take place but we will let the public know.”
Following the capture of the elusive “Mountain Man” last week, Funk explained that a Utah Highway Patrol helicopter was in the area and officials were asked if it could return for the search later this month. Utah Highway Patrol officials agreed.
“One of the kids that tipped us on the Mountain Man wants to ride in the chopper,” Funk said. “So we asked them (UHP) to come back and give the kid a ride while we look for the missing person.”
To date, neither family nor friends have heard from Larsen since he was last seen in December. Anyone with information in encouraged to contact the Emery County Sheriff’s Department at 435-381-2404.
