A July rainstorm broke Friday evening in time for the Scofield Miners’ Memorial Satellite Monument dedication that took place as part of the town’s Pleasant Valley Days celebration.

The monument, which was unveiled at the event, boasts the names of the coal mines located in Carbon County as well as the dates of their operation and the number of fatalities suffered at each one.

Corey Heaps, general manager of Skyline Mine, spoke at the event and gave a brief history of the area and how coal mining has played a key role in its development.

Heaps also paid tribute to the Winters Quarters Mine Disaster that started after a spark ignited in the coal mine and was only worsened by the releasing of noxious gasses.

After the history, Heaps proceeded to dedicate the monument to miners past, present and future as well as to their families.

After the dedication, those in attendance were able to view the monument and pay tribute to those they know whose personal histories have been intertwined with that of coal mining as well as to those who, as a verse on the monument states, continue to lie, “deep, deep down in the mine.”
