Helper welcomed Vernal Tuesday night for doubleheader action after a lengthy layoff. After shaking off the rust in game one, a game Helper won 6-4, the team then exploded in game two, winning the game 16-2.
“We looked rusty after not playing for a week and a half,” head coach Jeff Cisneros said.
Zac Bradley tossed six innings in game one, giving up four runs on just two hits, earning the win. Triton Abeyta came in the seventh inning and didn’t allow a run.
Cody Lowe, Tel Gardner and Mitch Olson each legged out a triple while Chase Morgan nailed a double. The team had seven total hits.
The bats came alive in game two as 14 hits led to 16 runs for Helper. Gardner had another triple and Lowe bashed two doubles. Kameron Gunter and Ty Anderson also logged triples in the game. Three pitchers combined to give up just five hits and two runs. Abeyta got the win after pitching two innings to begin the game. Jarod Lessar and Tel Gardner also pitched two innings apiece.
Sitting at 9-0 in league play and 12-1 overall, Helper will travel to St. George on Friday for a doubleheader. Helper beat St. George 3-0 on June 28. The team will then travel to Vernal on Tuesday for another double dip to end the regular season. The state American Legion tournament begins July 25 at Layton High School.
