After a slow start, the Emery Spartans put their collective foot on the pedal in the second half as the home team took the homecoming victory over the Union Cougars 29-7.
The Spartans got started in the opening quarter with a six-yard TD run from Logan Cox. Union answered in the second quarter with a touchdown of its own to tie the score going into halftime. Both traded multiple punts in the half.
Cox took the lead back for Emery, returning the opening kickoff 80 yards to paydirt for his second touchdown of the game. Tel Gardner (a three-yard run in the third) and Kolton Butler (a 25-yard TD reception from Zach Jorgensen in the fourth) both added a TD on the night to help the Spartans win going away.
Emery (4-3, 2-1 3A North) will host the Grantsville Cowboys (3-4, 2-1 3A North), who lost at Juan Diego on Friday 34-21, next Friday at 7 p.m. Emery, Juan Diego and Grantsville all sit at 2-1 in region action with just two games remaining.
