About the Project
Early last month, Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country completed its ninth A Brush with Kindness project of the year, with two porches for a couple in Price. Lynn and Sydney Firkins had recently purchased a new home only to find out that they would be unable to move in until two new porches were built to code. In the meantime they had to keep paying rent on their current home along with payments on the new one. With these unexpected costs springing up, they looked for programs in the area to help them.
The Firkins reached out to Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country in late August to find a way to fix the situation. After a period of planning and scheduling, Habitat Construction Manager, Steven Kerr completed the two porches in early October. The necessary changes included easily usable handrails, visible in the images. Lynn and Sydney are currently settling into their home. With three possible exits, their home is considered safer. This project is exemplary of the goals for A Brush with Kindness as it helped diminish excess costs and improved accessibility to a home.
We would like to thank the Sorenson Legacy Foundation, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, AmeriCorps, Wells Fargo, Rocky Mountain Power Foundation, Utah Association of Realtors, Union Pacific Foundation, S&V Glass, and Sutherlands for their support.
Without the sponsorship of these organizations as well as donations from locals and vendors, Habitat for Humanity would be unable to help deserving people in need of home repairs. We are always looking for motivated volunteers to help Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country. Visit us online at habitatcastlecountry.org for more information.
About a Brush with Kindness:
Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country participates in the program called A Brush with Kindness (ABWK) focusing on minor exterior home repairs that improve quality of life, durability, energy efficiency, and/or accessibility of a home. ABWK aims to improve circumstances for moderate- to low-income and elderly homeowners in all of Carbon and Emery County. The primary goal of the program is to eliminate all safety issues within the homes of these qualified homeowners. The projects are low-cost and are repaid through no-interest, affordable monthly payments. HFHCC relies on volunteer participation, which in turn strengthens the community. Previous projects include exterior painting/siding, stair/ramp accessibility, handrail installation, grab bar installation, door/window replacement, and landscaping.
HFHCC is a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization to which cash and in-kind donations are tax-deductible. Donations may be made by mailing checks payable to “HFHCC” to PO Box 724, Price, UT 84501.
