USUE Men’s Soccer Falls Short in OT to Trinidad State

Utah State Eastern men’s soccer lost 3-2 in double overtime to Trinidad State Thursday in Trinidad, Colo.

The Eagles controlled the game in the first thirty minutes but gave up a goal toward the end of the first half to be down 1-0 at half.

Trinidad State went up 2-0 on the Eagles quickly after halftime with an early goal.

Being down 2-0 on the road, the Eagles responded with a goal in the 55′ minute from Mat Clark, who got an assist from Xavier Smith.

The comeback would continue for head coach Ammon Bennett‘s team, in the 73’ minute Smith would put in a goal with an assist from Jojea Kwizera. Smith scored his fourth goal of the season on Thursday, which makes him tied for first on the team in goals scored with Luke Madsen.

With the score being tied at the end of regulation, for the second time this year the Eagles went to overtime.

Trinidad State scored the game winning goal from Ruben Ramirez with 1:15 left in the first overtime period.

After the game, Bennett said that his team played well to comeback from 2-0 in a tough game.

“Unfortunately, its just one of those games when it gets late there is a lot of hard challenges and lot of hard fouls,” said Bennett.

Sophomore keeper Austin Munoz was in the goal for the Eagles for 70 minutes of the game and had two saves. Sophomore David Novoa came off the bench for Munoz in the last twenty minutes of the second half and had one save.

The Eagles will take on Otero in another non-conference matchup on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

With the overtime loss, the Eagles drop to 4-41 overall and 0-2 in true road games.
