The popular Green River Rock and Mineral Festival has been scheduled for March 23-25.
Green River is home to some of the most spectacular geologic and paleontological sites in the world. The festival will feature talks from local experts, field trips to geological and paleontological sites of interest in the area, as well as vendors and educational booths. FRIDAY, MARCH 23
Opening Speaker: Greg McDonald
“SLOTH ON THE BEACH: AQUATIC ADAPTATIONS IN A LINEAGE OF EXTINCT SLOTHS”
Greg McDonald is a regional paleontologist for the Bureau of Land Management. Based out of the Utah State Office of the BLM, he works with the field offices in Utah, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Colorado. Prior to transferring to the BLM he worked for the National Park Service as the Senior Curator of Natural History in the Washington Museum Management Program, as Paleontology Program Coordinator in the Geologic Resources Division and as the paleontologist at Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument. Prior to his government service he was Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History and collections manager of vertebrate paleontology at the Idaho Museum of Natural History. He earned his doctorate at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on the extinct giant ground sloths and their relatives and Plio-Pleistocene mammals of North and South America.
