The Emery Spartans captured the 3A state title Thursday at the Wasatch Aquatics Center, earning their second straight championship and third in the last four years.
The Lady Spartans were looking for another title since earning their first in 2015. They finished in third place with 225 points, just behind the Carbon Dinos who had 257. Rowland Hall took first in the girls’ division with 279 points.
Emergency vehicles met the bus carrying the student athletes at the Emery County line and escorted it to the high school in Castle Dale late Thursday night.
The Emery boys finished the meet with 242 points, 55 points in front of second place North Summit. Judge Memorial rounded out the top three on the boys’ side.
As a team, though, Emery scored a whopping 467 points, 76 points in front of Rowland Hall.
Keldan Guymon continued his dominance in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, finishing in first place in both events with times of 22.67 and 50.99, respectively. He also broke school records in both events as well. Just a junior, Guymon has another year to work toward the all-time 3A mark of 21.17, set back in 2012.
Deegan Minchey also broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in third place in the event with a time of 1:00.55.
The Emery boys also shined bright in the team events, snagging first place spots in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Deegan Minchey, Asher Beagley, Parker Stilson and Keldan Guymon) with a time of 1:34.32. The quartet then ran away with the 400-yard freestyle relay, finishing over four seconds in front of second place Grand, coming in at 3:32.32.
The Emery girls’ 200-yard medley relay team consisting of Sydney Terwilleger, Haley Guymon, Kaelee Hooley and Alexis Johansen raced to a first place finish with a time of 2:03.31

6th Place: 400-yard freestyle relay (Angellena Migliori, Sydney Terwilleger, Haley Guymon, BriAnne Bass).
7th Place: Asher Beagley, 100-yard breaststroke.
7th Place: Boys’ 200-yard medley relay team (Levi Olsen, Eli Beagley, Jonathan Seely, Allen Durrant).
7th Place: Kaelee Hooley, 200-yard individual medley.
7th Place: Angellena Migliori, 100-yard breaststroke.
7th Place: Parker Stilson, 200-yard individual medley.
8th Place: Alexis Johansen, 50-yard freestyle.
8th Place: Alexis Johansen, 100-yard backstroke.

Those that finish in the top 16 spots are awarded points. The breakdown of points includes: 1st = 20, 2nd = 17, 3rd = 16, 4th = 15, 5th = 14, 6th = 13, 7th = 12, 8th = 11, 9th = 9, 10th = 7, 11th = 6, 12th = 5, 13th = 4, 14th = 3, 15th = 2, 16th = 1.
Emery Swim Coach Andrea Johansen should expect to compete for another state title next year, as just three swimmers who competed in this year’s state meet will graduate.
