Carbon County got its annual kickoff to summer with the Carbon Cal Ripken opening day on Saturday.
The weekend’s festivities began Saturday morning with teams donning their uniforms to walk Price’s Main Street for the opening day parade. Coaches, friends and family joined in on the march in front of countless community members.
The day continued with the first pitch of the 2018 season, thrown by 90-year-old Ron Jewkes. Jewkes started his youth baseball career in 1941 at the age of 14. He has either been playing baseball or watching his family play in Carbon County for over 77 years.
In his early years, Jewkes played for Kenilworth Coal League, where he has lived since he was born.
