Members of the PTA Reflections program visited Castle Heights Elementary school recently to recognize and honor a particular student that has achieved much. Carson Palmer, a fourth grade student, competed at the national PTA Reflections event in the film category and was awarded highly.
With over 15,000 students participating the previous year, Utah has one of the highest participation rates in the Reflections program. Students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade are eligible to participate and explore the arts. The 2017-18 theme was “Within Reach” and judging is first conducted within individual schools.
Six different categories are available for students to choose from: dance choreography, film, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. Once judging is complete at each school, the winning entries continue to council and region before continuing at the Utah PTA. Only 30 entries are then sent on from the Utah PTA to National PTA judging; this means only one entry per category and age group.
This year, 1,053 students submissions from 50 state PTA organizations across the nation were submitted. Palmer’s film was one of the entries that was able to advance to Nationals, where it then won the Award of Excellence in Film in the Intermediate Division. Palmer is one of three winners in his age division and will receive $200 of a Young Artist Scholarship and his work will also be featured in the National PTA traveling exhibition.
