The end of the school year is finally here and students can forget about the responsibilities of homework, classes and seasonal sports. Oftentimes, they also forget to buckle up during their summer fun.

The Friends of Rachel (FOR) Club and Student Government at Carbon High School recently began painting “Buckle Up” signs on parking lot exits at schools and local businesses to help remind students and local residents to buckle up before leaving the parking lot.

The project is on behalf of the public health education program with the Southeastern Utah Health Department.

So far, they have painted the reminders at seven businesses and all but three schools in the district. The students plan to continue the project once school resumes this fall.

Advisers Troy Chilcott and Arthella Williams have reported success already with the project. “While we finished up one of the signs, one person driving out of a parking lot rolled down his window, and said, ‘Don’t worry, I’m all buckled up!”

Williams hopes to see more success from this project. “We hope this small act of service helps save lives this summer as people buckle up,” said Williams.

If more businesses are interested in having the FOR and Carbon High Student Government paint a Buckle Up sign in their parking lot exit this fall for free, contact Arthella Williams at williamsar@carbonschools.org.
