A large crowd filled the chambers of Ferron City Hall on Friday evening to take part in a public hearing regarding the city’s involvement in the building of a new gas station. At a previous meeting, Justin Snow approached the city, asking about city property on 1st South and Main Street to construct a gas station. The council sought advice from the city’s attorney and determined the need for a public hearing.
Following preliminary city business, Ferron City Mayor Adele Justice called for a motion and a second for a public hearing. She went on to explain the format of the hearing, giving each speaker a two-minute time limit and only one time at the podium.
Nearly all of the speakers called for city action in favor of supporting Snow in this endeavor. After more than two years with no fuel in Ferron, almost everyone was in favor of doing whatever necessary to help get this new business on its way. Gilly’s owners were concerned about the ability to reopen their business if the financial negotiations could be worked out, but also voiced support for the new business. After many comments in favor of either selling, leasing or giving the city property to Snow, a motion was made to close the public hearing.
Mayor Justice then asked the council what action they wanted to take on this matter. Councilman Fox made the motion to sell the property to Snow and it was seconded by Councilman Trenery.
Discussion continued on the motion and the mayor informed them that they could legally charge what they had paid for it, or less, but not more. The negotiations will continue in this matter. A motion was made to defer the payments until time that the business is viable. Discussion on adopting an ordinance to prevent competition for the business was also heard. These things will be discussed at future meeting but a call to get the business started came from the council and all in attendance.
