Everyone who knew former Emery County Sheriff Lamar Guymon could relate a time when he was of service to them or someone they knew.

Guymon spent 40 years in law enforcement, 36 years as the elected sheriff of Emery County. This tenure was one of the longest standing sheriffs in Utah history as he dedicated his life to serving others. Multiple reports state that he was extremely compassionate to the miners and families involved in the Wilberg and Crandall Mine disasters.

“In addition to his duties as Emery County Sheriff, Lamar served on several boards and committees throughout Utah, using his knowledge, leadership and determination to make things better for those around him,” the Emery County Sheriff’s Office shared in a statement. “A special thank you to his dear wife GayLa and to his children for all the years of unwavering support they gave Lamar that enabled him to serve and lead in Emery County.”

Guymon served on many boards and committees, including chairman of the Castleview Hospital board, President of the Utah Association of County and the President of the Utah Sheriff’s Association. He was also involved in the trails and travel boards for Emery County.

He was also one of the founding members of the local biking club, MECCA.  He loved biking and could be found on the trails and streets of the counties riding long distances. Guymon was also active in his church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served with his wife GayLa as an ordinance worker for seven years in the Manti Temple. He had many callings and was serving as public affairs director, working with leaders of other faiths.

At the time of his passing on Friday, Oct. 12, he was serving as the mayor of Huntington City. In the short time he served the people of Huntington, his main focus was to better serve the community.

At the age of 71, Guymon passed away following complications from a heart attack ten months prior. Friends, family and members of the community paid tribute to his life and commitment during services on Thursday.

Sheriff Guymon leaves behind his wife of 52 years, six children, 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, the citizens of Huntington and all of Emery County whose lives he helped in many ways
