Box Score PRICE – Utah State Eastern women’s basketball defeated the Central Wyoming Rustlers 62-58 on Thursday night in Riverton, Wyoming. It was the second win over the Rustlers this season for the Eagles, who previously beat the Rustlers earlier this month at home 64-41.
The Eagles led the Rustlers most of the first half and went into halftime with a 11-point lead and shooting 51% from the floor. That double-digit lead would be in jeopardy in the second half as the Rustlers would shoot 55% from three and 42 % from the field. The Eagles would avoid the collapse however, and hold on for their sixth-straight win.
“The second half we played zone due to fouls which they hit shots in. Central had the momentum for a while but the team regrouped and made stops,” said USU Eastern Head Coach Chelsey Warburton. USU Eastern’s Emmery Wagstaff had a big night off the bench and was the team’s leading scorer with 17 points. Through ten games this season, Wagstaff leads the Eagles in scoring with averaging 12 points per game. “It is awesome to see the team play well whether they start or not. Emmery had positive minutes for us coming off the bench and she knocked down key shots and grabbed rebounds for us,” said Warburton.
The second leading scorer for the Eagles was freshman Amiperia Tia who had a career-high 15 points on Thursday. “Ami is the fastest player on the court, she attacked and finished well tonight. That is a strength that she needs to continue to use this season for us,” said Warburton. Tia shot 75% from the field against Central Wyoming with two assists and a rebound. Up next for the Eagles is another game in Riverton on Friday when they take on Western Wyoming at 5 p.m;.
