Carbon County Bookmobile services will cease as of March 29, 2019. Carbon County appreciates the Utah State Library Division, who carried the cost of Bookmobile services for the past three fiscal quarters. As Carbon County continues to evaluate its financial position, it has determined the cost burden of $100,000 per year to keep the Bookmobile going is not within the county’s budget.
In order to ensure Carbon County citizens have access to library materials, a transition plan is being provided for municipalities who do not have a brick and mortar library. An online option is also available now for those citizens with internet access at onlinelibrary.utah.gov. Materials may be downloaded to cell phones, tablets or workstations. Residents of the unincorporated portions of Carbon County are eligible to apply for a Price City library card as well.
For those citizens who would like access to a library but lack the ability to physically get to one, a remote library transport plan is being developed. The tentative plan is to have Helper City Library card applications available in both East Carbon and Wellington City Halls. Applications can be picked up, completed and returned to the appropriate city hall. The designated transport agent will be Pinnacle Canyon Academy. Pinnacle has graciously agreed to stop at the Helper City Library to retrieve materials for patrons and drop them at the local city hall. Patrons will maintain responsibility to retrieve and return library materials to the local city hall for transport. Patrons may also elect to check out/return materials directly to Helper City Library. This service will be provided through the end of the school year. Carbon School District will open school libraries throughout the summer for students with the remote library services available once again when school resumes in the fall of 2019.
The Bookmobile has proudly served our county for over 50 years. We thank Judy Moore, who has served as the Bookmobile librarian for the last several years and is well known throughout our communities. As this chapter comes to a close, please be aware we are working to continue to provide services in alternative ways to those communities lacking access to library services.
