Graduation Spectacular (Grad Spec) has been a staple for graduation students of Carbon High School for over three decades.
This celebration is an all-night graduation party hosted in order for those that have graduated to know they can celebrate in a safe, controlled environment. Entertainment, food, prizes and activities are all featured at the event. Local Taylor Rutherford recently took time to reflect on the event and the fact that her parents, Wayne and Leslie Woodward, were the ones tasked with creating the celebration many years ago.
“A duty that they’ve loved doing for those 30 plus years,” Rutherford said.
Leslie passed away unexpectedly recently, just one month before graduation. Rutherford shared that as a family, her father, sister and herself are looking to throw a party worthy of Leslie. She continued by stating that Grad Spec has always been dedicated to the students with this year being no different.
However, the event was in a great need for financial donations to assure it runs. The monetary donations assure that the graduates are taken care of in terms of the food, entertainment and more. Rutherford assured that no amount of donations go toward paying the organizers and is all spent on the graduates. The community came together, as it is famous of doing, and raised the requested amount of money for the family to put on Grad Spec.
This year’s event is planned to be ran Rutherford and her siblings. It will take place on Wednesday, May 22 at the Price Stake Center with doors opening at 9 p.m. High schoolers of all grades are welcome.
Beginning May 13, tickets will be available at Carbon High School for the price of $20 in advance. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door on the night of the event for $25. Those that wish to see a special 2:30 a.m. screening of the live action Aladdin film may pay an additional $3 and must have their Grad Spec ticket to view the film.
