Despite threatening skies and a light drizzle, a group of 25 hardy volunteers from the Ascension St. Matthew’s Church took a day off from formal church services to weed and landscape Castle Heights Elementary property and the surrounding neighborhood.

Pastor James Drury said that the day of service was part of the 25th anniversary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Over 100 congregations across the United States participated in service projects on Sept. 8. Drury said it was a natural fit to coincide with the United Way’s Day of Caring last Saturday.

The pastor explained that they were looking for projects in their neighborhood and that several kids from the church attend the local school. Parishioner Shawn Herzog is in her first year of teaching at Castle Heights making the activity a good fit.
