Group hug around Carbon High’s only senior girl, Grace Broadbear.
The top cross country talent in the state was on hand over the weekend at the Murray Cross Invite. Nearly 2,000 runners participated in the varsity and open competitions.
Thomas Boyden from Skyline topped the boys’ varsity race with a 14:04 time, averaging a speedy 4:46 mile. Emery’s Bryar Meccariello finished in 36th place with a 15:32 time while fellow Spartan Jess Christiansen ended just 16 seconds later in 58th place.
Chad Page led the Dinos with a time of 16:11 in 92nd place. Ryan Page also finished in the top 100 with a 16:14 time in 95th place. The most impressive aspect of the Dinos’ day was that their top five runners (Chad and Ryan Page, James Bryner 16:42, Shane Schaugaard 16:49 and Kobe Cruz 16:53) all finished under 17 minutes and within 42 seconds of one another. This demonstrates the strength and depth of the team overall. When talking about the spread, Carbon’s head coach Telisee Martak was ecstatic. “It was awesome to see,” she said. “We faired well against the best of the best,.”
Emery’s spread was 2:38 with Beau Cook (17:43), Merritt Meccariello (17:59) and Jacob Ewell (18:10) rounding off the Spartans’ top five runners.
Grace Broadbear led the Lady Dino’s with a 19:43 time in 19th place in the open race. Adaley Lester finished with a time of 22:07 to lead the Spartans followed by Bethany Justice at 23:02.
Kristy Guymon, Emery’s head coach, was happy with her team’s results. “Both our boy and girl teams ran very well at Murray. It was fun to watch them push each other as a team and to continue to get better each time.” She concluded, “we as coaches are very proud of our team and what they are accomplishing.
